-= Club Fate =-

You feel a *tap tap* upon your shoulder. Tingling with both fear and anticipation, you turn and are caught by the icy gaze of FATE.

What is your Fate? Is it goth swirling you above the room? Is it EBM pounding its message out in heavy boots? Is it industrial lovingly taping nails through your skull and into your brain? Is it the grind of old school guitar or the pulse of new school synth? Is it go-go dancing angels and devils, and all of your friends? It is all of this my darklings, and it beckons you forth. Into the light with you....

This month, Fate is pleased to host Special Guest DJ Cap'n along side DJs Gobo, Elektus and err0r. Some of you may remember Cap'n as a co-founder of Deviation and Counterstrike in San Jose. He's a dance floor shaking force to be reckoned with, and he's back.

Don't forget to hit the bar for our drink specials... happy hour prices all night long. Well drinks will be just $2.75. Selected beers for $1.00.

And after the show... catch a late night bite at the Saturn Cafe, open till 3 AM right down the street. Or continue the night at one of the various after parties thrown by your new friends. Oh, so many pleasures to be discovered right here in Santa Cruz!

And next week, Friday Aug. 12th, don't miss EQUILIBRIUM and UNWOMAN live at the Blue Lagoon. See www.ClubFate.net for more details.

cheap sushi

Gobo et al ...

Good news -- I found a cheap sushi place the other day! Our bills each were perhaps $5-6 (mine much less 'cuz I only do veggies), and we ate a lot. Bad news -- I don't know the exact price in US dollars, because we paid in yen and the exchange rates differ every day. Yes, this was in Tokyo, in the Shubaya district. I saved some in my pocket for my cheap sushi loving friends back in California ...

<John searches pockets, then searches those of other pants he wore on the trip>

OK, found them ... they're a little squished, and a few days old, and they smell a bit weird, and there's some lint and stuff, but ...

Regards,

I crawled slowly, awkwardly.
I was innocent.
I was vulnerable to assault from the outside
As I gorged myself on the world around me.

Now, I am warm in my chrysalis.
And I am growing.
And I am changing.
And when I emerge.............

I will be the most gross, most hideous moth you have ever seen.
And I will throw myself against your reading lamp light bulb all night long.
And I will struggle to hurl myself into a light bulb until I lose consciousness.
The whole time wondering,
. . "Why don't I burn?!"
. . "Shouldn't I be burning?"

A dream

I had a strange dream this morning. It came in two parts. Somewhere in the middle of the day part I got up to use the bathroom. When I went back to bed the dream picked up where it had left off. That happens to me sometimes.

So there was a bunch of dream before this part. I don't really remember it aside that it had a heavy traveling with friends theme.

It is now day. I am in a car with a bunch of friends. I'm not sure if any of them are real life friends. We are parked in a cul-de-sac in a neighborhood by an inland bay. The street opens to the shore line with rocks breaking gentle waves.

We walk on a paved path along the water, around the side of a house. The path leads around a corner to the front of the house. I go in. (Some of the detail in here got lost because I had to get up to pee.) My reason for being here is related to business, but I feel that I don't really have anything to do. I explored the house. I walk in and out of various rooms. I look at the walls, and furniture, and floors.

One sitting room is filled with a pale gold light. A bunch of friends are sitting on couches and the floor. The room is pretty small. There is no room for a coffee table. People are tightly packed. They are socializing. I don't feel connected to the conversation, like I am there but floating around. I wander around some more.

At this point the house doesn't have a solid architecture, but retains the pale gold light vibe. It feels like a perpetual mid-morning. The space opens out as I wander through. A room's details evolve in front of me.

There is a room where some professionals are discussing diagrams laid out on the table. I think that I am there to provide information and am waiting on there decision.

There is an indoor courtyard like complex where I run into a few friendly faces, each individually. Most of these people are friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

There is a laundry room / kitchen like area where a couple of young women are taking care of / playing with several children. An echo from my own childhood memory. The room opens out to become an outdoor patio and small backyard. I see a swing set some kiddy cars, a tree, a small lawn. The setting is suburban. The patio area appears to be a drive way, and the aluminum covering over our head is a car port. The interesting thing about this backyard setting is that I know it is "located" on the front side of the house, in the same space that originally held the front door, bay view, and small sidewalk path leading down to the water.

I end up back inside. At this point I am interested in the house's layout, trying to make sense of the architecture. I look out a window on the bay side and see the bay. I walk to the front door area, and find an additional locked door, like that portal that separates two hotel rooms. It is on the same wall as the bay view window, but there is another full house on the other side. I go out the front door to examine the house front. Sure enough, this house is a duplex, with the other complete unit set between mine and the bay. I go back inside. The window with bay view is still in exactly the same place. This means that I am seeing this bay view through another solid structure. I decide that this doesn't make sense, but still there it is, and that it's possible because I am dreaming.

I go out the front door. The dream changes. It is now night. I am here for a party.

The tree lined sidewalk extends up along the front of the house, away from the bay, to a circular, wall enclosed patio at the far end of the house. The side wall of the house and the patio wall are a sandy tan stone like material. There are colored lights. People are sitting round, talking, smoking, enjoying the music. On the house side of the patio, there is a large outward facing semi-circle of tables filled with various DJ rigs and club sound equipment. There are components facing the DJs on the house side of the tables, and there are components facing the crowd side where I am. There are several DJs at work, but somehow, their music is coming out as a single great mix. The workspace is like an open DJ laboratory. I start to play with some of the equipment.

Some sexy guy appears next to me. He is taller, thin, pale but healthy, his outfit is sharp and his blacks match perfectly. He has sort of a Robert Smith hair cut but not as messy and angled forward. He has a gorgeous face and sharp eye makeup. He starts to show me how to balance out the setting of two features on an amplifier. Soon he is leaning firmly into me with his torso and pelvis, grinding slightly. I get hot and bothered, but somehow also manage to understand what he is telling me about working the amplifier. Sex and sound systems. This goes on for a while. Then someone announces, "The front room is closing!" We part.

I leave the party in a car with friends that, again, I don't think are from real life. We arrive in the parking lot of some new club. From outside, it doesn't look like there are many people around, but inside the party is really going off. Unlike earlier at the house, the architecture of the club makes immediate sense. The music is different than I'm used to hearing in goth clubs. It has a spacious and colorful feel. It reminds me of Gary Numan, Kraftwork, and some of the better new electronica. I have a conversation with the DJ about how to blend this new sound with other styles of music so that the crowd will be thrilled. I dance and socialize a bunch, but don't drink like I would in a real club.

Suddenly the club is closing. For the first time I see a couple of real life friends. They are talking to a girl with a Betty Page look about her. I take a quick walk through the rest of the club's rooms. I realize that this is my ideal venue. It has several good rooms, one with windows that open to the outside, perfect lighting and sound system, and a great crowd.

I head over to use the bathroom before leaving. At this point I think that I have been drinking or something. The bathroom area is very different from the rest of the club. It looks like the interior of an old low rent Victorian up in the city. Have I returned to a house party setting? The walls are sided with thin wood slats common to 1930's quickie remodel jobs. The walls are a dirty white. The room is lit by a bright uncovered light bulb on the ceiling. There is a door into the single occupant bathroom, and another that goes to some side room. My two real life friends from the main dance room now reappear from the side room with the Betty Page girl. They are laughing. I can tell that they have some after hours libations, and ask if they will share.

There are several people waiting around to use the bathroom. I strike up a conversation with two of them and end up performing sort of funny dance. They are amused.

It's my turn for the bathroom. The room is more of an old water closet than a modern bathroom. It is cramped. The toilet and sink are crammed close together. I go in and latch the door locked.

So there I am, sitting on the can, pants around my tall boots, TP in hand, about to wipe my ass when I notice that a girl is sitting up on the sink, her feet resting against the wall. She is filing her nails. She is wearing army drab cutoff cargo pants over white thermals and black boots. She has a light colored long sleeve shirt and bondage collar. She has bleached blond hair on a round face and really dark eyeliner and lipstick. She looks over at me and says, "You should have locked the door." It's almost like she's trying to make a sexy power play, except that it's not sexy. Her piercing gaze intensifies and takes on a hard probing edge. She is trying to rattle me because she has caught me pants down and wiping my ass. I decide that there is nothing that I can do about it, and that I'm not going to be rattled by her, and that it'll probably bug her if I just go about my business. She tries to up the pressure on me. She says, "You know that I'm not really here." I decide that both possibilities are equally disturbing; that 1) she is really there laughing at me, or that 2) she is a hallucination and that I am insane. Either way, I figure that this is a dream, so there's no danger in just going along with it. Let her watch. I go back to wiping so that I can meet up with my friends.

I realize that I am starting to wake up. The setting stays the same for a bit. Then the parts start to disintegrate, leaving me with a ghost image as the light creeps in. I wake up in a good and slightly surreal mood.

This just occured to me -- perhaps Gobo _does_ run the world, and in order for us to appreciate peace, tolerance, the wonders of scientific pursuit and the human intellect, and the commonality that all humans share, he has to show us the opposite (on all counts) by allowing someone who represents none of the above in the White House.

Gobo, please! We understand now! Make it stop!
Response to Dante's 2nd room sets last week was so strong that we have to bring him back this week! Dante's sets tend toward the Wax Trax/TVT/Red Ant end of industrial. He also likes to play the best of the brand-new with a strong beat. If your looking for classic or brand-new industrial, send Dante your requests at gcdante@ yahoo.com (remove the space.) You can also bring him CDs with your requests on them.
